Grooming Update

We are officially back, and rode in on just about the nicest grooming job you have ever seen. Hats off to Jay for doing a very, very nice job.

We are now focusing our grooming on the Poker Run, which will be next Saturday, the 7th. Jay has already groomed the whole route once, and I will be doing part of it on Monday. Then, during the week we will keep polishing it up. If the predicted weather shows up next Thursday and Friday, we will run as needed to get everything perfect.

If all this did not answer the question, let me answer it here: Yes, we have enough snow. We have very good cover, though we would wish for more.

Snow at Last

We are still in sunny SoCal, but I am looking at the same picture you are, and it looks like we got about a foot, and every inch helps. Happy riding!

Conditions as of Tuesday, the 20th

We still have good coverage on our groomed roads. Let’s hope the coming week will add to that. We will be gone for several days to sunny southern California for a meeting. I should put the next update up in seven or eight days.

I can say it is awfully icy in the mornings, and where the snow stays in shadow, and that has created problems with overheating, hyfaxes, etc. Just bear that in mind when you ride, and hope for some new snow!!

More On Snow Conditions

We did some riding today, and it was really good. The snow softens by mid morning in all but the shadiest of spots. Jay has groomed the basin again, and it is quite smooth. The snow has settled a lot, but we still have a couple of feet of packed cover, so hopefully, we can last it out to another stormy period.

Someone in a 4X4 tried to drive in, and made it almost to Bucks Lodge. Of course, they ruined the road, which is the main reason it got groomed again. For those who may not yet know it, both Plumas County, and the Plumas National Forest have ordinances that prohibit wheeled vehicles on groomed surfaces. That message is also posted right at the staging area at Bucks Summit, so there are no excuses. All the Forest Service needs to write a citation, with a large fine attached, is the recording of a license plate number. We get a few incidents like this every winter, and it is very discouraging. You have to wonder, “What were they thinking?”

Up Date on Conditions

We have not been as active with the groomer as I thought we would be. Primarily because there has been no new snow, and you can ride anywhere. Jay did groom the local roads and out to 4 Trees last week.

To be honest, the conditions are less than ideal. We are in a freeze/thaw cycle that produces hard, slick ice at night, till mid morning, and then soft surface after that. The shaded areas are remaining frozen all the time, so it can get tricky riding or walking in some areas.

The lake is pretty well frozen over, and this morning the ice was singing and moaning. If you have been here during winter, you know what that means. It is almost like the lake is alive.

January 3 Grooming Update

All the Bucks Lake Basin roads have been done a few times now, and the riding is great. People are still making their own trails in the back country. I expect we will start to get to those areas next week.

Don’t forget, the Bucks Lake Poker Run is scheduled for February 7. We will have another great ride groomed, and we talked about the food today at the Snowdrifters meeeting, It will be great, as usual. Probably the best of any poker run.

Finally, we do want to thank all of you for your comments. After a few more cabin chores, (like clearing the snow off the deck), we will have time to post up some new winter pictures, and maybe a few from our great Germany trip. Those of you who have ever seen the incredible cathedral of Koln, or the castles on the Rhine know what I am talking about.
