A Perfect Day

The temperature is 44. The sky is blue. There is no wind. The groomed trails are the smoothest they EVER are. And the snow that is not groomed, after a little crust, is still fluffy and powdery.

And tomorrow should be almost as good.

Nothing more to say…..

Just a Little Snow

We only got 2″ last night, and the sky is slowly clearing as the day goes on. The forecast is just all over the place, but I am betting on a nice Friday and Saturday, followed by a pretty wet (snow? rain?) Sunday.

Jay ran the groomer yesterday, moving a lot of the slush around. Even though we lost a dramatic amount of depth, the base is solid, so even though the sleds splash the snow around a lot, that is only the top 3 or 4 inches. I would call the riding pretty good.

A Little Update

How about having an update so we can say we did one?

We finally got to ride this morning, and it was not bad where it had been previously packed down. It looks like we lost a dramatic amount of snow depth, probably 3 feet. On Mile High Road, where it had not been ridden since the big snow, it was treacherous, with the sled wanting to sink in and tip dangerously.

The forecast for the next several days seems to predict a little of everything: rain, snow, clear a couple of days. But, Friday looks good all day, and just about all of Saturday should be good, as well. Maybe we will see you here, as we plan to be doing a special job for State Parks on Saturday, on the summit.

So, there’s a little update……

L A Swimming Pools

Now we are really doing our part for southern California’s swimming pools! 1.85″ of rain as I write this, since about 5 am today. The good news is that our recent snow can soak up a whole lot of rain before things get weird.

You might be able to drive up here without chains, but the snow is just awful. Soft, mushy, you sink and get stuck when you try to turn. The weather people are holding out hope for snow starting on Tuesday. Let’s just keep that thought.

Roads and Snow

We went to Quincy today, and also rode. The County has done a great job on the summit parking area, and on Bucks Lake Road. They deserve our thanks.

Re: riding, the snow is settling dramatically, and a few people are venturing out into ungroomed areas and, mostly, not getting stuck. By the weekend, if the weather does not screw it up, it should be the perfect combination: limitless powder, that you can ride almost anywhere. A little slice of heaven.

Too Much Powder

We have had 123″ of snow since Monday, the 9th!! That’s just too much snow in eight days. I think we have more than done our part for L A’s swimming pools, so now I hope Mother Nature shuts off her great toilet in the sky.

We have both the Summit and Big Creek roads groomed. The County has plowed Big Creek parking area, and tomorrow morning they are bringing the big blower and a grader up to the Summit. So, as of tomorrow afternoon, access and riding will be very good. Then, of course, there is the weekend forecast. We’ll just deal with that when it arrives.

When you get off the groomed roads, the powder is bottomless. In fact, the groomer is having a very tough time pioneering any thing that has not been groomed for a few days. That includes 4 Trees. I suppose we will try that pretty soon, but it could be very, very tough riding for the next few days, even for good riders on great sleds. If we get 4 Trees done, I will post it here. Certainly it will be a few more days before we make a serious attempt at the other back country roads.

123″ in eight days. Wow!

The Latest…..

Here’s some good news. Big Creek is groomed all the way to the parking lot, and the county did get the big blower to the summit this afternoon, so, if you really MUST get here there are ways to do it now. Another 18″ over night, with steady light snow all day. Everyone is pretty much holding their breath for the much advertised Sunday storm. Maybe a couple of feet.

Too Much Powder

It is 10:20 pm. We have had at least 25″ of new snow today, and it is still snowing hard. Remember, when you look at the picture, the two sleds are in a tree well, so they get the least amount of snow possible.

As of around 1 pm the county had not yet plowed to the summit, and there is a rumor floating that the big snow blower is down for repairs. All this means, don’t come. This snow will still be here next week or next weekend. You just can’t get here from anywhere else right now.

Back On The Air

Even with a heater on it, our internet dish got buried last night. It took me 20 minutes to get to the back of the cabin to clean it off. We have 18″ new so far since midnight.

POWDER, POWDER, POWDER

The picture does not lie – – it seems serious winter is back from vacation. We have AT LEAST 18″ new since Monday, and we think another 18″ by this time tomorrow. Since the temperature has been well below freezing all week, the snow is light and fluffy, and a joy to ride. In addition, Jay has been keeping up with it in the groomer, so the ride in will be OK, if we can continue to cope with the new snow.

If you want powder, now is the time. Just cross your fingers that the county can keep the road open, and get here any way that you can.
