SNOW

At this point, every little bit helps. We got about 8″ last night, and that is enough to give us good riding just about everywhere. Now, if we can just avoid the rain predicted for the next storm……

I have heard that both parking areas are now quite full, so I hope no ones’ plans get spoiled.

PARKING, PART II

I groomed Big Creek today, and then went to Quincy, so I got a look at both parking lots. First, Big Creek groomed very nicely, and is a good ride, from about 3/4 mile above the parking lot. There is no one at the lower lot now.

The summit lot has quite a few spaces, maybe 40, right now, so for another couple of days, parking should not be an issue.

We have both lots available now, with, hopefully, more snow on the way……

PARKING

I rode Big Creek this afternoon, and it is just fine to about a 1/2 mile below Schneider Creek. There it gets thin. But you can make it all the way to the parking lot, and just go over a couple of very small bare spots. Keep to the left for about the first mile, as the 4X4’s have made a mess of the right side. There is not enough snow to groom, so it will be bumpy, but it is an alternative when the upper lot fills.

According to Jeff Iversen, the upper lot is about half full right now.

SNOW GAUGE

We put up our home grown snow gauge today, and I hope it is viewable. Those are the biggest numbers we could find. For you Forest Service folks who look at this website, here is the answer to your question: two screws, that will be removed in the Spring. (!)

The rain yesterday was followed by 2″ of fluffy snow. We’ll take all we can get right now. While the coverage is adequate, and the ride is smooth, there are some spots just barely covered.  Jay Grubbs rode Grizzly Forebay a couple of days ago and said it was pretty good. There were a couple of spots where he had to go over a few feet of dirt, but nothing bad.

Parking. As always, during the holiday season, that is an issue. On Sunday the upper lot was 2/3 full. Since then, no doubt, some have left, and some have arrived. I noticed driving up that there was snow down to Big Creek, but as most everyone knows, there are a couple of spots just around the corner where it can get thin. I will try to ride it tomorrow, and post the result here.

Remember, once we get some storms in, and are grooming frequently, you can read the groomers’ blog at www.buckslakesnowdrifters.com.

THE WEATHER STATION

OK, all you thousands of weather buffs, who watch the weather page, it is working again, and I believe I have fixed the computer so the shut down will not happen again.

When we rode in today, there was about 2 feet of packed snow, with some areas just covering the pavement. It was very smooth, but I sure hope we get some more snow on Monday and Tuesday. We’ll see. Be sure to check on the Snowdrifters website for the latest grooming report.

YOU’RE RIGHT. IT’S STUCK

Yes, the weather station is stuck. Probably there was a power failure, and the UPS did not do its job. The problem is we are stuck in Reno till about the 19th. I will fix it as soon as we get to the cabin, and my apologies to everyone who looks at the weather page.

GETTING READY TO RIDE, PART II

The Plumas National Forest has issued a Forest Order, closing all the Bucks Lake groomed trails to ALL wheeled vehicles, including ATV’s, effective December 15. In their order, they mentioned there is a $5000 fine associated with violations.

It seems every winter we run across someone who has decided to do it for fun, or got confused and thinks he can drive the back road, “because my GPS said I could.” I hope that doesn’t happen this year.

GETTING READY TO RIDE

Late word from the County is that they will NOT be plowing during the storms predicted to start over the weekend. If there is justice in this world that could mean riding to start, say, around December 9 or 10. Do a snow dance……
